modding psp [ask here]
**WARNING**
I only recommend this procedure to people whose psps Backlight are Broken.
If youre backlight is not broken i recommend you to do this mod
-> http://www.llamma.com/PSP/psp_led_light … uttons.htm
************
i wrote a nice long text but my pc crashed so i dont want to write down the whole thing again today. Ill put the pictures.
Whaat im trying to do is create a new backlight (because the old one was broken) using a led that takes energy from the battery. If this works the old psp will have an hour longer to live.

Dismantle Tutorial
http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showth … p?p=409326
***
What you have to do is get the right control pad out, this is not very hard
its clipped on at the bottom near the charging device and at the top.
There is also a fat wire at the bottom, flip the brown clips open and you can pull the wire out.
This done you can take the gameplate out
The rest is a few posts below...

Re: modding psp [ask here]
Just be sure that the voltage is right for the led, otherwise you might get ended up with an exploded battery and totalled PSP.
But otherwise that is a good idea.

Re: modding psp [ask here]
thats why you use resistors, to stop that from happening.
did you know that your backlight of your handhelp works with 20volt? even though the psp battery only 3.6v. how can that be?
well its simple to explain but hard to make. inside the psp there is a circuit which amplifies the strength that goes through the led by using as little energy as possible.
im working on that. i figured out where i have to solder to make the led take electricity from the battery.

Re: modding psp [ask here]
last night i made the backlight for my psp, il upload pictures and a video as soon as im on my pc.
okay well the backlight is strong enough to see the lcd screen.
what can i still do with my fat psp?
- run homebrews 3.40 LE
- listen music
- view pictures.
only problem is you cant play games that well.
il use my fat psp to downgrade my psp slim. And while im playing on the slim il listen music from the fat.
you might be not very impressed coz it doesnt seem very bright. before it was black and usles

Re: modding psp [ask here]
Okay il explain what i did
what i need:
- ooo screwdriver
- soldering iron
- lead
- smd led
- aluminium
- sticky stuff
- at least two hours time
(if this is your first soldering experience, be sure that you have more than one led. Watch out for hooking up the resistors wrong. And dont burn your hands like i did)
Open up your psp
tutorial... search that on google <<psp dismantle tutorial>>
Wire up the leds, the wires go in two little holes near the battery
use aluminium to reflect the led, place the resistor behind the metal part
with the led on it should look like this
lcd popped back on it looks like this
i used some tape to scotch everything together and it works, apart from the analog stick.
Voila
Mybe some of you might think the led isnt bright enough, well no actually it isnt but 20% of the normal backlight is better than a black screen. Plus i learnt loads making these modifications, and quite proud that i didnt brake the psp more than it was.
What i can still do with my 3.40 LE
- use homebrews
- fix bricked psps with D_Alex unbricker
thanks
Duelord
how to attach the leds below...

Re: modding psp [ask here]
thanks il do that its really funny taking the psp apart.
did you know that the psps motherboard and the mem stick reader are only attached by two cables!
that means i could theoreticaly take the umd reader away and replace that space with an ipod memory. like 20gb

Re: modding psp [ask here]
ram is limited to the capacities of the motherboard. wont change if you add more memory

Re: modding psp [ask here]
Thank you JaXeRiR and Rollin Roll for the qj.net this is sooo cool.
Because people might be more interested il give more information.
The hard part of the operation is soldering the wires to the holes near the battery, (thats on the right side of the psp.) The holes are aproximately half a mm wide, and hard to sold on.
Here a picture of where you have to attach the wires
about the picture, the black circle is the X
Well i didnt find one tutorial that explained how to make the backlight work. So i just had to do with what i had.
Hook up red with red
Well i used very strong Smd leds, you can only hook up one of them from the psps battery.
What i might try is get two leds, with half the amount of energy, and hook them up on the sides, with that maybe the light of the screen is more equal
**WARNING**
I only recommend this procedure to people whose psps Backlight are Broken.
If youre backlight is not broken i recommend you to do this mod

Re: modding psp [ask here]
Let it be known, if you manage to break your backlight on a PSP-1000, you can order a replacement LCD with backlight here:
http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc … ts_id=8335
It's US$69.95, and they do sell quantity:
10-99: $62.96 each (10% off)
100 or more: $55.96 each (20% off)
They also sell a touchscreen film for the LCD.
http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc … ts_id=8448
$23.95 but nobody's hacked one into a PSP yet.
There's also a project using these LCD+touchscreens as well:
http://www.virtualcogs.com/store/produc … ucts_id=59
Basically a poor man's touchscreen PSP.
