Moovlin PC - Dev Thread

Hey, I put up a poll on a flash site a few months ago asking if I should make Moovlin in Flash for PC, got 50 votes and went ahead.

I've been working on it for two months, art and coding are by me, music is from the Newgrounds Audio Portal.

It's not concentrated on the RPG element anymore, more like Sonic.

Re: Moovlin PC - Dev Thread

It goes to "Hostrators" promoting site. Volcano level looks nice, not much interactivity though - but I think your idea is to present art for that level?

- Parallax effect works well with background and foreground elements.... except when you run backwards...

- Your arts shape is pretty good, how tree's and volcano's shape up to be - but I would advice checking the colours, contrast and maybe getting rid of the outlines. It could look pretty cool if your foreground objects and shapes would be dark, and background fully coloured. Right now, if you give your game a quick glimpse, it is hard to tell which is foreground and which is background.

- Advanced way to make foreground stand out from background is to consider the thickness of air in background art's colors. Air makes objects tone change slightly to pale blueish the further the object is. (in your case greyish, because of the sky colour). Because you're working with flash - you can do it easily with Properties Panel > Color: Tint!

- I found out the sliding mode and actually got into playing the concept level. It feels a tad scripted, otherwise pretty great action. I suggest you make your engine fully playable also backwards. Then player don't feel cheated when he wants to go and grab that lost coin - he think he saw....

- Final note: I know Moovlin is huge for you, but I think you could give him a redesign. Animations works pretty well for the character, but thinking how much experience you've had making many, many games, or even this game, I suggest you take a fresh new look at the design! If it does not work out, use your old one.

Good luck with your new game and sorry if I sound harsh, I'm just giving my humble opinion and try to help you out smile

Re: Moovlin PC - Dev Thread

Thanks for the feedback.

-The Outlines are supposed to be there, it's supposed to look kind of shell shaded. Something you would draw on paper.

-Yeah, a coding glitch doesn't move the background while you move. I'll fix that.

-I really don't want the game to be played backwards, but I've gotten similar comments about the wonky look of him doing the moonwalk. I'll try, but I won't be happy about it...

-Redesign, explain... Maybe you could help me? He is supposed to look block-like, and eventually I wanted to move on to making Blender 3D models, but I sucks at it..

Thanks for the feedback, I'm now working on a new engine...

Please people, leave some more feedback.

there is a glitch in the volcano level when you land in the volcano you get pushed backwards and also when you fall you dont die and have to refresh the page.
