3.95 firmware out
Good news, Sony PlayStation Portable owners! It seems that the latest firmware for Sony's handheld, version 3.95, is almost ready - and with it comes something that we've been waiting for: improved PSone control customization AND improved Sony PlayStation 3 connectivity. Awesome!
This comes directly from the US PlayStation Blog, where PlayStation Network Operations Director Eric Lempel made a news post about the upcoming firmware. His post, verbatim:
While playing PSone games on your PSP, you can now customize how the buttons are assigned by going to [Controller Settings] > [Assign Buttons] and select [Custom].
You can now quit Remote Play and choose to turn off your PS3 or leave it on after quitting. This is useful if you are performing a download and want to quit Remote Play, but still want your download to continue on the PS3.
Select [Quit and Turn Off the PS3 System] or [Quit Without Turning Off the PS3 System] from [Quit Remote Play] when you press the HOME button on the PSP system.
Pretty neat trick, being able to quit remote play without turning off your PS3. This pretty much leaves your Cell Processor-powered beast to continue downloading media off the PlayStation Network store, or if you simply want to switch to the full console experience. Here's to more updates like these!
Thanks to Darkshneider for the tip!

Update: To quote a certain Tim Y., cripes, that WAS fast! The firmware looks like it's been released early. No new details here - it's the same as was previously reported above, so if you're in the mood to get your PSP up to date, here's your chance. Be sure to exercise caution, however - we haven't quite yet received official word. Other than that, enjoy!

Re: 3.95 firmware out
Since it only brings two improved things, and the version number moved from 3.93 to 3.95, I think it doesn't do anything else.
I might look if it would be possible to use a few 3.95 PRXs in 3.90 M33-3 to get the PS1 game button customization.

Re: 3.95 firmware out
And if I may assume, the good ideas are those Sony has ripped from CFWs. Like custom themes, listening to music while watching pictures, CPU on 333MHz and much more - heck, even custom wallpapers were first used on 1.5 with PSPersonalize!

Re: 3.95 firmware out
Many people say that 4.00 firmware will bring some major improvements to the firmware, but I doubt this. Even though 2.00 (web browser, wallpapers+more) and 3.00 (POPS+more) were big updates, we're on 3.95 already! Before 2.00 there was 1.50 (0.50 leap) and before 3.00 there was 2.81 (0.19 leap). But I hope that we get Divx support!

Re: 3.95 firmware out
I wouldnt call them amateur..after all, DAX has come up with countless downgraders, and now pandora? It seems unlikely sony can counter such force, XD

I meant that they are amateur because they do this as a hobby, and the people at Sony work to do the new firmwares and they get paid for it.

Re: 3.95 firmware out
I only use CFW so I can use IRShell to extract Zips/Rars and move files about. Oh and play gpSP (GBA Emulator). Other than that I just play Monster Hunter Freedom and MHF2. CFW will come in handy when MH2ndG English Patch comes along though.

Re: 3.95 firmware out
It says playing ps1 games on your psp.
I thought the only way to do that was with CFW?

Re: 3.95 firmware out
You can do that on official firmware too, you just need to buy the games from the PlayStation Store.

Re: 3.95 firmware out
hmm, i think sony should let us do whatever the hell we want to do with our psp's, we paid a good 200 dollars for them, they should not restrict what we can do with them.

Re: 3.95 firmware out
If homebrew (read: illegal ISOs) were available for every PSP from teh box, developers would not support the platform. That's what is happening right now. Many developer studios have quit to make games for the PSP because it is so easy to get the PSP downgraded and to run illegal content.
