[Review] Coded Arms

Coded Arms. The first FPS shooter released for PSP must have a lot of potential to be accepted by gamers. The game has had multiple bad reviews by critics due to bad storyline and repeatitive gameplay. This is why Konami has released a new game, Coded Arms: Contagion. But here we go with the original one in the series.

Gameplay
In the game you are a hacker, a chosen one bound to destroy a military program which has suddenly gotten self-intelligence. The gameplay goes through small levels where you warp to the next one through a warp point which opens when you have defeated all the enemies at the level. The enemies are some kind of aliens, hard from the beginning which means that you have to be smart, fast and be ready to take cover when the enemy fires. But the levels are way bad, since there usually is just 5-6 rooms which are connected to each other by small halls. And the rooms are always filled with enemies. Luckily, as soon as you get the enemies out of a room you can just crab health packs and ammo, and you can almost never run out of bullets. The guns are fun, you start every level with a pistol but when you progress you can get gravity guns, lighting guns and of course shotguns and much more. This is almost the only suberb thing in the levels. The load times aren't very bad compared to a few another shooting titles for PSP.

Graphics
You probably guessed that this game is a first-person-shooter. The graphics are good, they are actually awesome, but the thing that bothers me is the sudden darkness at some rooms. You cannot see almost anything. There also is no ingame-videos, and that might bother some people. But if you would just like to get shooting and skip any vids then this is good for you.

Controls
The controls are the exact opposite of other shooting titles like MoHH. Of course you shoot from R and that, but unlike MoHH you look around with the cross, triangle, circle and square and move with the analog nub. Luckily this can be changed in the settings. Other than that the controls are a bit too over-sensitive, at least the analog nub.

Sounds
The music is very limited. It only plays when you encounter an enemy. This is good if you are in a room but you think that there are no enemies. I really liked the sound of the weapons, since it sounds and feels right.

Overall
Although this game has many cons, including the hardness of the enemies and the stupid "room to room" gameplay with no new inventions but the "hacker-killer" kind of gameplay, this game belongs to the dedicated FPS player's game collection not only because it is the first FPS released for the PSP but also because it brings you a different kind of view to the world of shooting games.

Gameplay: 6,5/10
Graphic: 9/10
Controll: 7,5/10
Originality: 6/10
Sound: 8/10
Overall: 7/10

Re: [Review] Coded Arms

Well, imagine Metroid with repetitive electronic music and difficulty beyond anything understandable.

You'll get a game pretty close to Coded Arms.
