After I've downgraded to 1.5... Then what?

Ok, I have not yet downgraded my 3.50 TA-082 PSP, but I want to be prepared when I get my Lumines and have a 1.5 PSP at last. I was just thinking if I should upgrade to Dark_Alex's custom firmware, or keep using 1.5 and DevHook. My main purpose with a downgraded PSP is to play homebrew, emulators, and UMD games and of course, watch my UMD discs and maybe watch MP4 files from memory stick. vWhat do you suggest? Most people will probably say I should go with custom firmware, but i would mostly like not to mess with Flash0 so much, so please tell me if DevHook is easy to use and what firmwares can I emulate with it? I know so far that i should dump the DATA.DXAR or something like that from inside the EBOOT.PBP update but which is the best version of DevHook to use with 1.5 firmware or should I just move on to custom firmwares?

I think that Rollinroll would have the best advices for me in this matter, or someone else who has/had 1.5 or CFW (custom firmware)

(for you who don't know, DevHook is a homebrew application to use with 1.50 or custom firmwares to run newer firmwares and games which require higher Firmwares.)

Yeah the problem is that upgrading to custom firmware isn't as easy as upgrading to Sony's official. You have to use multiple programs such as PSAR Dumper, to dump some PSAR files, because downloading those files from the net is illegal.

I have now figured out how to install and use DevHook 0.51, I know it's old but that's the one I mostly need (it can emulate firmwares up to 3.01) and all my games work with even 2.81

Re: After I've downgraded to 1.5... Then what?

I have now looked at a couple more tutorials on how to update to 3.40 OE-A and I think that's the way I wanna go. DevHook is OK, but I might want to run my own PS1 games in the future, and it has recovery mode and better web browser than when emulating with DevHook (gets stuck) andit is way better in many ways.

If someone of you guys is scared of this downgrading/upgrading stuff then look at this guy, he first downgrades from 3.40OE-A to 1.50 then upgrades to 3.03 OE-C then to 3.30 OE-A then BACK to 3.40 OE-A in less than ten minutes, and result? Good and working PSP, no brick: Crazy downgrade/upgrade guy!

Re: After I've downgraded to 1.5... Then what?

It's not difficult to upgrade to custom firmwire, it just takes some time because first you have to download the psar dumper then download the 1.50 and 3.40 update files to the memory stick, then run the psar dumper so it generates a psar file witch takes some time. Then you must run the updater so it flashes the contents of the psar to the psp. And custom firmwire is better because i got a little too exited and download some xmb icons and stuff... Then my psp got semi-bricked (screen turned white when it was supposed to load the xmb and turned off) and that is easy to fix with custom firmwire! I got into recovery mode, toogled usb on flash0, and then i overwrited everything with my flash0 backup. And it was fine again. What if that happend with official firmwire 1.50? The psp would have been bricked forever!

Well, yes, it is much better than official, I think that I'll do that, but also you can't really get to edit the icons without custom firmware so it can't happen with 1.5.
And usually you don't even get a semi-brick, if you download the icon and theme packs from the net and just put them to f0:/vsh/resource and let it overwrite everything.
But if you try to make them yourself, then I get it.

But the chances are as high as with upgrading to official, that's what most people don't know, because Team Noobz say in their site that there is a chance and people just get scared.

THE CHANCES OF BRICKING WITH DOWNGRADE ARE AS HIGH AS WITH UPGRADING TO OFFICIAL, EXCEPT WITH THE FACT THAT IF YOU WOULD BRICK WHILE DOWNGRADING, SONY WILL PROBABLY REFUSE TO FIX/REPLACE YOUR HANDHELD (If you know exactly what you're doing, and follow the readme, you should be completely fine) The upgraders/downgraders don't actually do anything so different -- They both just format flash0 folder and place their own files there, except some when upgrading to CFW, you have to have the custom DATA.DXAR file in the root of your mem stick. It coul be so much easier with just the file included in the pack -- but what are you gonna do, it'd be illlegal.

Actually Sony never refers breaking your PSP as "bricking" that's a slang term -- But other than that, it is Sony's message.

I have heard that you can brick your psp completely by changing the coldboot. Is that true? Because i have messed with almost anything else in the xmb than the coldboot.

That might be why you can't start recovery mode, because the coldboot is corrupted. I'm not sure but I assume so. Anyways I wouldn't start messing with the coldboot, I'd just be happy with what I have now.

Re: After I've downgraded to 1.5... Then what?

i read that bricking by downgrading 3.5 to 1.5 was very unlikely because files are newly written and not overwritten.

And no-one has bricked yet. That's what I read. So I assume it's even too safe!

So, you aren't going to be messing anything with the XMB, gameboot or psp's flash JaXeRiR? I bet you'll do. Anyways, can you brick your psp if you have gameboot and custom icons and stuff on while upgrading?

No I don't think so. Because the installer formats the flash memory before installing a new firmware, so it should not brick because of those.

Okay, but i'll overwrite my flash0 with the backup i have when i upgrade just to be sure. I will probaly never update to a new custom firmwire anyways because Dark_Alex have leave the psp scene.

You don't probably even have to upgrade at least not in a little while.

I feel like... Like we're alone now... DAX, the greatest one... Is gone... Right before I'm entering the world of homebrew and CFWs...

UPDATE: Seems to me that I will have to wait a little bit more. I ordered the Lumines game previous friday, and today I got an  e-mail saying that the Lumines game is sold out in the hole country! I'm still looking if I can find another.

Re: After I've downgraded to 1.5... Then what?

It would be best to experience both ( if you know what i mean) First play around with v.1.50 and play some of the homebrew they have then upgrade to cfw and have some real fun. Thats what im gunna do when I get mine.. I been waiting like 4 ever to play Smash GP PSP and My chances are getting slim cuz every1s gettin Lumines hope it isnt sold out >.>. But anyway it would be cool to have both to see wich one is better.. I already know cfw is but Give 1.50 a try smile

That's not needed cause custom firmwire can emulate homebrew that was made for firmwire 1.50.

I'm gonna do the exact same thing. If I survive from 3.50 downgrade I'm not gonna jump right to 3.40 OE-A and cause my PSP to brick. At least I want to have some fun before sending my PSP to graveyard or heaven. Probably and hopefully heaven. But after I downgrade, I won't be able to use anymore official firmwares and since DAX is gone there's not gonna be any custom firmwares either. So I maight be stuck with lower than 3.40 UMD games, emulators, homebrew, PSX games and ISOs.
Now that doesn't sound bad after all, since all my games work even under 3.00!

Re: After I've downgraded to 1.5... Then what?

shall i go on custom firmware 3.40 OE

and i 3.50 > 1.50 > 2.81 > 3.50 (to make internet connection) > 1.50

shall i stay 1.50  or go 3.40  OE?

can both firmwares do the same?
