So, i've been working on this  driving game for a few days now.  Im going to post a demo of what i've done in the next few days.  So heres the desc. and updates along the way.

Description:  Umm... no storyline really(yet).  The game screen comprises of the driving area on the right and the status screen on the left almost a 50/50 split down the middle.  The controls are X:Gas, Left/Right:Turning, Down:reverse, Up:Emergency Brake.  I have a two different view/drive modes (so far), depending on your preference, they are; 1.  Car always points north in place while turning and moving the screen under you or 2.  Car turns while in place, and the screen moves under you.  They're will be two different goal driven tasks in the game 1. collect stuff for missions while driving around the city (more like a highway right now big_smile) and 2. Complete laps on the track in record times and such.  The game map is made of 16 tiles 3x3 on screen and the other 7 for fluid changing of the tiles.

Progress:

  -Uhh, made the basic interface and map tile movements and stuff.
6-22-08
  - Swapping out full car rotation for a 8 way directional approach.  This is in order to limit or negate need for sin and cos equations.  Not sure of performance increase yet.
  - Added a switch for map tile movements to lower cpu usage. Lowered cpu by 4% (on my comp)  Cooperates with change above since map changes can be checked by direction (so not every direction is checked).
  -Game runs faster but still pretty slow.  More optimizations need to made for this game to be possible big_smile.

  -took away some reality features (i.e. not turning in place, turning radius vs     
    speed) for no intentional reason just need to recode to be comaptible with
    other new stuff.
  -Lowered cpu usage by another 4% by optimizing random chunks of code big_smile.
  -changed to 5x5 tiles for even smoother tile movements but decreased performance a bit, might change this again to 4x4 not sure yet.
  -swapped to 16 way movements, did not affect performance, but looks cleaner.
  -im estimating cpu usage at 186mhz not sure thats a good estimate or not big_smile.
  -1.1mb memory usage
  -filesize = 11.6kb
Does anybody now the cpu speed of the psp.  Is it limited when using the flash player in browser?

cpu speed for psp is 333 mHz, i think. ram is 64 for slim and 32 for phat.

Ok,  i'm just going to post a demo of what i've done so far.  Don't review the graphics, i've only been working on the coding (about 320 lines).  It still lags, but not nearly as much as it did this morning.  On my 1.8ghz comp it was at 18% cpu now i've got it to peak at 10% and averages 6%, and 1.1mb ram.  Go ahead and take a look, the link is in first post.  The numbers on the tiles are just placeholders so i know that the tiles are being replaced correctly big_smile.

If you're on official firmware then the CPU is 222Mhz except in a few games that use 266Mhz or 333Mhz. But you are correct about the RAM, although the Slim runs as easily out of RAM in the internet browser as the Fat.

Very nice, but you might want to get rid of the 50/50 split, and take the cricle, direction, and speed, and put them in the corner. (Bottom left)

I'm going to keep the split so objectives, gas, upgrades, speed, and other stuff can be seen.  +It lowers the amount of screen the psp needs to render constantly.  The circle and numbers that are there are just for me while im programming it.

nice project. graphics are the only probem i have an idea. i assume ur background  is tiled so make a tile with 4 of those squares u already have and put a different symbol in each. do you follow?

I'm not sure what you mean by make a tile with 4 of those squares.
Each of those tiles that have numbers on them are seperate tiles.  there are 25 in total and only 9-16 are on screen at a time.  The tiles are moved to the oppsosite side if they are off screen and then load a specific frame according to a two-dimensional array i.e." var map = [[1,2,3,4,5],
                                  [6,7,8,9,10],
                                  [11,12,13,14,15],
                                  [16,17,18,19,21],
                                  [21,22,23,24,25]];" <-- this about what the map looks like now.
If the tile is outside of that map it loads the default "1" tile.  So in effect you can drive for endless amounts of distance outside of that initial 5x5 map that i made for testing.  The great thing is the map array can be giant as it dosn't affect the performance very much since there is only 25 tiles that have a display at a time.  The lag problem is little complicated atm.

btw, i already said the graphics are just placeholders while i get the coding done...i wouldn't make a game with tiles with numbers on them lol.

A pc version would be cool. Make a watered down version and a PSP version. But, also, having the screen half/half makes it look messed up. Just pull out the compasand the speed and put it down lowers, a little transparent, in the bottom left corner, so we can see more and navigation would be easier.
